DMEF Announces Annual Awards Recipients
July 14, 2011 — The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) today announced that Dr. John Deighton, Brierley Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, will receive the Edward N. Mayer, Jr. Education Leadership Award — and Guthy-Renker, one of the world’s largest direct marketing companies, will be presented with the Corporate Leadership Award.
This year’s honors will be presented at the DMEF Annual Awards Dinner, Saturday, October 1, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. This prestigious event presents both marketing professionals and academics with the unique opportunity to gather together to celebrate the growth of multichannel marketing, stress the importance of education and entry-level placement in the greater community, and help advance cutting-edge direct/interactive marketing education resources. The dinner, which is the Foundation’s premier annual event, will be held during the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) DMA2011 Conference & Exhibition, the Global Event for Real-Time Marketers, which will run October 1-
“DMEF’s Annual Awards Dinner attracts the top marketing leaders and influencers in the industry, because they recognize how vital DMEF’s outstanding programs are to educators and to the next generation of marketers,” said Richard Hochhauser, DMEF’s chair. “This year, we are delighted to pay tribute to John Deighton and Guthy-Renker, as we honor their commitment to advancing excellence and strengthening education in this rapidly evolving field.”
Edward N. Mayer, Jr. Award for Education Leadership
The 2011 Edward N. Mayer, Jr. Award for Education Leadership will be presented to Dr. John Deighton, Brierley Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and former DMEF Robert B. Clarke Outstanding Educator Award winner.
The Mayer Award, DMEF’s most prominent annual award, honors individuals who demonstrate the highest level of personal commitment to helping create effective programs, concepts, teaching methods, or materials for the instruction of college students or professors; providing personal and corporate financial assistance; and executing any other contribution that effectively assists or promotes the DMEF’s mission and objectives.
Professor Deighton is editor in chief of Journal of Consumer Research, and founding co-editor of the DMEF’s Journal of Interactive Marketing. His research is published in the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Marketing, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, among others. Commendations include a "best article" award from the AMA. He has held visiting positions at the University of Tokyo, Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, and the Judge School of Business at Cambridge University. Deighton leads the HBS executive education program, titled “Taking Marketing Digital.” He is the executive director of Marketing Science Institute, board member of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation, and director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University.
Mayer Award nominations are submitted by peers and reviewed by DMEF’s board of trustees, which selects the honoree. Corporate Leadership Award
The 2011 DMEF Corporate Leadership Award will be presented to Guthy-Renker, one of the world’s largest direct marketing companies.
This unique and significant award honors businesses that champion education on all levels, including internal and external audiences, as they consistently demonstrate a commitment to excellence industry wide. Past DMEF Corporate Leadership Award recipients include Scholastic, Draftfcb, The Martin Agency, Acxiom, and Merkle, to name just a few.
Guthy-Renker supports many initiatives in marketing education for younger generations, including participation in DMEF’s Next Generation Leaders program. Since 1988, Guthy-Renker has discovered and developed dozens of well-loved, high quality consumer products in the beauty, skincare, entertainment, and wellness categories, with distribution now in 65 countries. Known for moving, award-winning productions and marketing campaigns featuring some of today’s leading celebrities, the company has been credited with transforming the broadcast direct marketing industry.
Co-Founders and Co-Chairmen Bill Guthy and Greg Renker have set industry standards for trust, integrity, and best practices — and along the way, have helped shape industry governing policies. Greg Renker is a founding member of the leading industry trade organization, the Electronic Retailing Association (ERA). He was elected as the first chairman of the ERA’s executive committee/board of directors, and now serves as chairman emeritus.
